Bivariate Assignment #1

Part 1

Do this for each of the following functions: (1) Predict what the function's graph will look like in the domain x: -3 ... 3, y: -3 ... 3; (2) Test your prediction; (3) Explain discrepancies between your prediction and the actual graph.

(a) z = x2 - y3

(b) z = cos(x) sin(y)

(c) z = x esin(y)

Part 2

Define functions that produce graphs similar to the ones shown on the attached pages (i.e., a function for each graph).

Please take special care to write up your emerging understandings soon after they emerge. Don't wait until you're finished to try to reconstruct your thoughts.

1. x: -2 ... 2; y: -2 ... 2

2. x: -2 ... 2, y: -2...2

3. x: -2 ... 2; y: -2 ... 2

4. x: -3 ... 3; y: -3 ... 3

5.

(This graph is a cone)

x: -2 ... 2; y: -2 ... 2
6. x: -3 ... 3; y: -3 ... 3

(Pay attention to curvature!)

7.

C7

x: -2 ... 2; y –2 ... 2

(See some other attempts at these AFTER YOU ARE DONE WORKING.)
